Gabon (1959-1960)
Before it became independent, the autonomous republic of Gabon flew an unequal tricolour with a French flag in the canton. The green stripe represented the forests, the green stripe represented the ocean, and the thin yellow line represented the equator. On 6 August 1960, a few days before independence, Gabon removed the French flag and widened the yellow stripe. The current flag keeps its predecessor’s unusual ratio of 3:4.
