Veliko Tarnovo (?-Present) Bulgaria declared independence from the Ottoman Empire on 22 September 1908. The declaration wasn’t read in Sofia but Veliko Tarnovo, the country’s former capital. Known as the “City of the Tsars”, Veliko Tarnovo has a purple flag with the city’s coat of arms on it.
