Puerto Rico (governor’s flag, 1976-Present)
Christopher Columbus was the first European to visit Puerto Rico. The island’s coat of arms, granted just 18 years after his 1493 voyage, features the letters “F” and “Y” for Ferdinand and Isabella, the Spanish monarchs who bankrolled Columbus. Before 1976, the governor’s flag featured the island’s Great Seal.
