The Federated Malay States was a union of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang. Its four stripes were derived from the colours of the four states’ flags. When the rest of British Malaya was united under a single government in 1946, the flag of the Federated Malay States became the flag of the entire peninsula. In 1950, the government of the Federation of Malaya held a contest to design a new flag, and the result was a precusor of the modern Malaysian flag.
