The main chart gives a snapshot of the flags flown on December 31st of each year, and the Events section below lists any changes that happened in the preceding twelve months.
This site was first created in 2015. The annual charts from before that time are built from historical research and interpretation. Contemporary observers would not have categorized the world's flags in the same way that this site does, and even the modern pages are constantly being updated as times change and new information comes to light.
