ARGENTINA • On November 11, the governments of the Argentine Confederation and the State of Buenos Aires signed the Pact of San José de Flores, which reunified the breakaway province with the rest of the country.
HAITI • The republic was re-established on January 15.

ITALY • The monarchies of Central Italy were overthrown by Sardinia: Tuscany on April 27, Parma on June 9, and Modena on June 11. The territories started flying Italian tricolours and were merged to form the United Provinces of Central Italy on December 8. The new psuedo-state was a precursor to full annexation by Sardinia the following year.

On September 29, Tuscany adopted a new merchant and consular flag – the Sardinian tricolour with a silver lion on the green stripe. This flag was used until the United Provinces were annexed in March 1860.

VENEZUELA • The Federal War began when Liberals seized control of the city of Coro on February 20. On February 25, they resurrected Simón Bolívar's 1817 design for the national flag and added seven blue stars to the yellow stripe. On June 15 the number of stars was increased to 20, one for each Venezuelan state that was to join the federation.
