Events of 1877
BULGARIA • The Bulgarian Volunteer Corps who were fighting in the Russo-Turkish War flew a white-green-red pennant. This was the first example of the Bulgarian tricolour, which would be adopted in rectangular form when the country gained its autonomy the following year.
INDIA • An Imperial Durbar was held on January 1 to crown Queen Victoria as Empress of India. Many of the flags and arms of the princely states are known to have been in use for that occasion, although it's rare that we know when exactly they were adopted. Below are the flags of Baoni, Barwani, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bilaspur, Cambay, Chhatarpur, Faridkot, Garhwal, Mandi, Nabha, Pratapgarh, Sikkim, Suket, Tonk, and Wankaner, which are all probably from around this time.
Jaipur and Jodhpur added emblems to their flags in 1877.
Kishangarh replaced its triangular pennants with an unusually tall rectangular tricolour.
KASHGARIA • Chinese general Zuo Zongtang — probably best known here in North America as the namesake of General Tso's chicken — reconquered Kashgaria for the Qing Dynasty. The Kasgharian ruler Yaqub Beg died during a retreat on May 30.
SALVADOR • A fourteenth star was added to the flag in February.
TRANSVAAL • The South African Republic was annexed by the United Kingdom on April 12.
UNITED STATES • A 38th star (for Colorado) was added to the flag on July 4.
