Events of 1884
ABEMAMA • In April, King Tembinok' adopted a flag with four stars representing the islands of Abemama, Aranuka, Kuria, and the recently-conquered Nonouti. The British Navy soon forced him to renounce his claim on that fourth atoll, and on June 28 he was made to personally cut the fourth star from his flag.

ACADIA • On August 15, the Acadian flag was chosen at the National Convention in Prince Edward Island.

ESTONIA • The first Estonian tricolour was made by the Estonian Students' Society on March 26. The flag soon became a symbol of Estonian nationalism and was adopted as the country's national flag in 1918.

TRANSVAAL • Under the terms of the London Convention of 27 February 1884, Transvaal was recognized as a fully independent state, and its previous name of "South African Republic" was restored.
