January 1: Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles and became a constituent country of the Netherlands in its own right. The Netherlands Antilles removed a star from its flag
February 25: Ferdinand Marcos was forced out of power in the Philippines and the previous shade of blue on the flag was restored.
February 25: Haiti readopted its blue over red bicolour.
April 11: Christmas Island, an Australian territory, unofficially adopted a flag showing a golden bosun bird.
August 15: The Sámi Conference innaugurated a new official flag for Sápmi. The four colours were taken from traditional Sámi clothing, an the circle resembled a traditional sun-moon motif.
October 21: The Marshall Islands emerged from a United Nations trusteeship to become an independent country in free association with the United States.
November 3: Micronesia emerged from a United Nations trusteeship to become an independent country in free association with the United States.
November 3: The Northern Mariana Islands became a U.S. commonwealth.
