February 10: The ornamental pattern on the flag of Belarus was stretched out to cover the entire width of the vertical stripe.
May 28: Following the death of President Bingu wa Mutharika, the highly unpopular flag which he had imposed on Malawi was abolished in favour of the country's original flag.
November 11: The anti-government opposition forces in the Syrian Civil War united under the banner of the Syrian National Coalition, which claimed to be the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people. The coalition readopted the country's original independence flag, first flown in 1930.
