Events of 2017
February 2: Moldovan President Igor Dodon proposed adopting a national flag based on the coat of arms of the medieval Principality of Moldavia. The flag, which originated with the country's Moldovenist movement, deliberately eschewed any pan-Romanian symbolism.
August 19: Governor Irina Vlah of Gagauzia proposed readopting the separatist "wolf flag" alongside the territory's official "sky flag".
November 28: On the 57th anniversary of its independence, Mauritania added two red stripes to its national flag, symbolizing the sacrifices of the Mauritanian people. The change came following a controversial constitutional referendum in August which abolished the Senate and increased the powers of President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
