Events of 1928

AFGHANISTAN • After a visit to Europe, Amanullah Khan introduced a more "modern" tricolour flag with a new national emblem on September 2. Amanullah's reforms provoked a strong backlash which led to his ousting just a few months later, but the tricolour ultimately endured as a national symbol.

SOUTH AFRICA • After a lengthy debate, South Africa replaced its red ensign with a tricolour on May 31. The design was a compromise between English settlers who wanted the Union Jack on the flag and Afrikaners who did not. The opinions of the majority Black population were predictably not taken into account. The new tricolour would serve as the national flag throughout the apartheid era, and it remains a potent symbol of white supremacy to this day.
