January 1: Egypt, Libya and Syria officially established the Federation of Arab Republics and adopted nearly identical national flags.
January 17: Bangladesh removed the map from its flag to make it easier to manufacture.
February 11: Ras al-Khaimah joined the United Arab Emirates.
March 31: The Northern Mariana Islands adopted a flag depicting a Chamorro stone pillar.
May 22: Ceylon changed its name to Sri Lanka and adopted a slightly different flag.
July 12: The Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe adopted a flag.
August 19: Bahrain adopted a new flag.
Sometime in 1972: The Somali Coast Liberation Front adopted the flag that would eventually become the national flag of Djibouti.
