May 1: The People's Republic of Kampuchea changed its name to the State of Cambodia and adopted a new flag.
June 18: Burma announced that the official English translation of its name was Myanmar.
September 9: The Cherokee Nation added a black seven-pointed star, representing the people who lost their lives on the Trail of Tears, to the top right corner of its flag.
December 27: Romania removed the communist emblem from its flag.
