January 7: The Comoros adopted a new national flag. The four stripes represented the islands of Mohéli, Mayotte (a French territory), Anjouan, and Grand Comore.
January 27: The new government of Afghanistan adopted a flag based on the one flown by the Kingdom of Afghanistan before 1973.
February 14: Bahrain adopted a new flag upon becoming a Kingdom. The five points on the serrated edge represented the five pillars of Islam.
March 26: Tyva shortened its flag from a 1:2 ratio to a 2:3 ratio
May 20: Timor-Leste became independent from United Nations administration under its original 1975 flag.
