January 24: Turkmenistan shortened the ratio of its flag from 1:2 to 2:3 and slightly adjusted the carpet pattern.
October 25: Rwanda abandonded its 'R' flag, which had become associated with the 1994 genocide. The blue, yellow and green stripes on its replacement represented peace, economic development and prosperity.
November 13: The unrecognized Taliban government in Afghanistan was removed from power following an American-led invasion.
