March 24: The Cook Islands held a referendum in which it voted to return to its original green and yellow national flag. The change was never enacted.
April 27: South Africa adopted a new flag to coincide with its first post-apartheid elections. Originally intended to be an interim flag, the new design blended the black-green-yellow tricolour of the African National Congress with the red-white-blue colour scheme found on the flags of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The six colours were arranged around a Y shape, representing a covergence on a new harmonious future.
June 24: Taiwanese independence activists proposed replacing the old Republic of China flag with a new "Hearts in Harmony" design.
October 1: Palau emerged from United Nations trusteeship to become an independent country in free asociation with the United States.
