June 7: Belarus changed its national flag to one that closely resembled the flag it flew as a Soviet Republic.
July 4: The Northern Mariana Islands darkened the shade of blue on its flag.
July 14: The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags were officially proclaimed as Flags of Australia
October 5: The Republic of Macedonia, facing intense diplomatic pressure from Greece, changed its national flag. The old Vergina Sun is still flown by some Macedonian nationalists.
October 18: Oman changed the proportion of the stripes on its flag.
October 31: Gagauzia added three stars, representing its three municipalities, to its national flag.
December 5: Eritrea changed the ratio of its flag from 2:3 to 1:2.
December 22: Tuvalu adopted a shortlived national flag which did not include the Union Jack.
Sometime in 1995: The southern Sudan People's Liberation Movement replaced the red star on its flag with a gold one.
